Possum Removal Melbourne
Safer and Greener Pest SolutionsPossum in the roof? We get it out and seal the entry, so it cannot get back in.

Possum In Your Roof?
Then you are in the right place. Heavy thumping across the ceiling after dark, hissing or coughing sounds and a strong smell that gets worse in warm weather all mean possum rather than rat.
Possums are protected in Victoria, so this is not a job you can trap and drive somewhere. A brushtail has to be released on the same property within 50 metres of where it was caught, which means it walks straight back in unless the entry is sealed. Sealing is the fix, and that is what we do.
Possum Removal From The Roof With One Way Doors
We find how it is getting in first. Broken tiles, a lifted ridge capping, gaps at the eaves or barge boards, a rotted fascia, or a branch acting as a bridge onto the roof. Possums are strong and they reuse the same entry every night.
Then a one way door goes over that entry. The possum leaves at dusk to feed as it normally would, and cannot get back in. No trap, no handling, no stress to the animal, which is exactly what the Act requires.
Once we are satisfied the roof is empty, everything gets sealed properly. Where a possum will not use the one way door, or where there is a nest with young, we bring in a licensed possum catcher rather than push it, and the sealing follows once they have finished.

Is It A Possum Or Rats In The Roof?
Possums are much louder. You get heavy thumping and dragging across the ceiling after dark, hissing and coughing calls, and a strong smell that gets worse in the heat. Rats are lighter and faster, and you hear scratching rather than thumping.
It matters because they are completely different jobs. Rats get baited. Possums are protected, so they get a one way door and a sealed roof.
If you are not sure, tell us what time of night it starts and how heavy it sounds, and we will usually know before we get there.

Keeping Possums Off The Roof
A sealed roof holds as long as nothing gives the next possum a way up and a reason to try. Melbourne has plenty of both.
Overhanging branches are the usual culprit. Cutting them back off the roofline removes the bridge, and it is the single most effective thing most owners can do themselves.
After that it is maintenance. Tiles that slip, capping that lifts, timber that rots at the fascia and gaps that open up around solar penetrations all become an entry eventually, so they are worth a look each year.

Possum Removal FAQs
Can you just take the possum away?
No, and neither can anyone else. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 a brushtail possum trapped in a building has to be released on the same property within 50 metres of where it was caught. Relocating it further, or off the property, is against the law. That is why sealing the roof is the part that actually solves it.
If the possum goes back within 50 metres, won't it get into the roof again?
It will, if the entry is still open. That is exactly why trapping on its own achieves nothing lasting. The possum stays in its territory either way, so the job is about making the roof impossible to get back into rather than moving the animal.
What is a one way possum door?
A one way door fits over the entry point the possum is already using. It leaves at dusk to feed as it normally would and cannot get back in afterwards. Nothing is trapped, handled or stressed, which is what the Act requires, and it lets the possum come and go on its own terms until it has moved on.
Is it a possum or a rat in my roof?
Possums are much louder. Heavy thumping and dragging across the ceiling after dark, hissing and coughing calls, and a strong smell that gets worse in the heat all say possum. Rats are lighter and faster, and you hear scratching rather than thumping.
Can I just block the possum entry myself?
Please do not, especially at night. If the possum is inside when you seal it, you have trapped a protected animal in your roof, which is both illegal and a much worse problem to deal with afterwards. Work out that it has gone out first, which is what the one way door is for.
Are ringtail possums treated differently to brushtails?
Yes. Ringtail possums cannot be trapped or handled at all without an Authority to Control Wildlife permit from DEECA, where brushtails living in a building can be trapped under set conditions. So identifying which one you have matters before anybody does anything.
Do you use a possum catcher?
Then it is handled carefully and not rushed. Separating a mother from dependent young is not something we will do, so we bring in a licensed possum catcher and seal the roof once they have finished. It takes longer and it is the right way to do it.
